This morning started bright and early as Rob and I got up to run a local 5k.
The town we moved to, Littleton, began a week-long fest on Friday called “Western Welcome Week”. The week is full of events like races (running and bicycles), children’s events (fishing and rubber duck racing), book sales, golf tournaments, and other events.
Since I was seriously missing the racing scene in Vietnam, and haven’t raced since I convinced my parents to run that 4.4 miles, I was thrilled to check out a Denver event.
There were about 150 people in the Pancake Stampede that took place along a greenbelt by our apartment. We registered around 7:30 and at 8:00, we were off!
Mile 1 flew by, as it tends to do. I was about 10 steps behind Rob until around mile 2.7. He was flying!
Rob and I finished together, scoring the exact same time of 24:37. We were both thrilled with a sub 25.
My focus the past few weeks has been on the 9000 in 90 Days Challenge, so I haven’t been running much. I felt strong during this race until around 2.5 miles. Then I just had to keep reminding myself that I had less than a mile left.
I was third in my age group!
The score at the end was the free entry into the All-You-Can-Eat Pancake Breakfast with race entry. Some delicious pancakes and sausage happened about 30 minutes after we crossed the line. Talk about quality refueling.
I really enjoy little community events like this. If anyone has any ideas on how I can make a career out being involved with them in some way, please let me know!
